Mergers and Acquisitions Research Centre holds fourth annual conference

International academics welcomed to Cass to discuss the latest in M&A research

The Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Research Centre (MARC) at Cass Business School recently held its fourth annual conference at the School’s Aldersgate campus.

The conference, which is co-sponsored by the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI), brings together academics, bankers, lawyers, consultants and accountants to consider the very latest research in M&A. Over the past four years, this conference has developed into the must-attend conference for academics globally doing research into mergers, acquisitions and corporate restructuring. The conference had presenters and attendees from Europe, North American, Asia and Australia in attendance.

David Petrie, Head of Corporate Finance at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) delivered a keynote address on ‘Geopolitics in M&A’, reflecting on some of the key issues affecting the global M&A market today.

Conference co-chair Professor Scott Moeller said the conference was the ideal opportunity to share the latest research and thinking in M&A.

“The conference allows us to bring cutting-edge research and practical ideas from leading international academics directly to corporations, regulators, professional service firms and exchanges.  It acts as a bridge between policy and practice and is an opportunity for our students to meet leading M&A practitioners and develop their own professional networks,” he said.

Co-chair Dr Anh Tran added:

“This is an interesting time for those of us working in M&A.  This conference allows us to discuss topical issues such as acquirer returns, merger waves and private merger negotiations in greater depth.”

The conference was organised by Professor Scott Moeller, Director of the M&A Research Centre; Dr Anh Tran, Associate Professor of Finance at Cass Business School; and Professor Paolo Volpin, Interim Dean of Cass Business School.
