Corporate Finance

This module in corporate finance will provide a basis for investment and financing analysis and decisions, and a foundation for a more in-depth study of the subject for the students who wish to go on and specialise in finance in their MBA. The course comprises two compulsory parts - first focusing on investment decisions and second
focusing on financing decisions.

You will become familiar with the role of finance in business; to help understand the nature of available financial instruments and determinants of the prices of marketable securities; to be familiar with methods of risk management and desirable corporate debt structures.

Learning outcomes:

  • Role of finance in the firm: savings and investments; securities markets v intermediaries; financial managers; primary, secondary and OTC markets
  • Valuation of income streams: present values, annuities, perpetuities, bonds
  • Valuation of equities: the dividend discount model and its derivations
  • Investment appraisal: the net present value rule and alternative decision criteria
  • Risk and return: portfolio diversification and the capital asset pricing model
  • Capital budgeting and risk
  • Financing decisions and market efficiency
  • Corporate Financing: optimal financing, dividend policy and debt structure
  • Valuing debt: term structure and yields to maturity, duration and volatility, different kinds of debt
  • Managing risk and Derivatives --- Options, future, forwards and swaps

Accounting and Financial Reporting

Learn to read and understand financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, statement of cash flows, and statement of changes in shareholders’ equity), with knowledge of your strengths and limitations, as this is a fundamental skill for an effective manager in today’s business environment.

This module will provide you with an understanding of the basic principles of financial measurement and reporting, focusing on the identification and measurement of assets, liabilities, shareholders’ equity, revenues, expenses and cash flows.
