Programme: MSc Investment Management

Current role: Investment Solutions Sales, EFG Asset Management (EFGAM), Monaco

I completed my undergraduate degree in Business Studies at the Business School in 2007, before working as a Broker at Berkley Futures in London for four years. I enjoyed it, but I wanted to make a career change into finance. I decided to go back to study for an MSc in Investment Management to acquire the knowledge that would help me develop my career. As I knew the school and had already studied there, it was an easy decision to make.

I really enjoyed the programme. I liked the practical focus of the MSc, particularly the classes with Dr Nick Motson, which were very interactive. Every aspect of the classes provided the technical background, which was then supported with practical examples. As a result, I was able to put the theory into practise straight away. This approach came in handy when I first started out on my new career. Later, after I completed the MSc, I found the knowledge we covered very useful, relevant and applicable. Whenever I had questions at the beginning of my career, it was easy to go back to my lecture notes to quickly find the answers I was looking for and apply them to my real-world role.

For me, one of the highlights of the programme was the international elective on asset location in New York. I really enjoyed spending time over there and having the opportunity to embrace the practical elements and visit institutions such as JP Morgan. We covered a great deal on creating the right portfolio, which was very valuable. Again, I think it helped me quite a lot, as I’m still applying and using the knowledge I learned.

My cohort was great and I met a nice group of friends, and we still keep in touch today as we progress in our career.

I met with the careers team towards the end of the programme. They helped me to polish my CV and gave me some useful tips and insights on applications. My time at the Business School gave me more insight into what I wanted to do with my career. It enabled me to understand that I wanted to focus on the market and it definitely helped me to achieve my goals.

Soon after my MSc I started work at EFG in private banking, as an Assistant to one of the Relationship Managers. Last year, I had the opportunity to move into the Asset Management Company Investment Solutions Desk. Now, I work in Investment Solution Sales with EFG Asset Management in Monaco.

I embarked on this career change at the age of 28, never having worked in this industry before. With the experience I gained I was able to secure a role, jump right in and be on the same level as colleagues who have been doing this for a few years.
