Cass PhD student continues stellar 2018 with Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Award

Brace of awards completes standout year for Cass PhD student

Research student, Silvana Pesenti, has been awarded the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Award in recognition of her outstanding thesis Robustness and Sensitivity of Risk Evaluations.

The Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation awards annual prizes for outstanding work in selected fields of engineering science, medicine and natural science.

It particularly rewards research characterised by its high potential for practical application and by the special significance attached to it.

When congratulating Ms Pesenti on the award, Professor Marianne Lewis, Dean of Cass, said she deserved special recognition.

“I say that because this is the second award Ms Pesenti has received this year, the first being for her involvement in winning team of the Society of Actuaries’ research challenge.”

“Having spoken with her PhD supervisors, it’s clear how proud of her they are, and I’m extremely pleased to say that I share that pride.”

Opening doors to a career in academia

Ms Pesenti said having her thesis recognised with such a prestigious award was a great honour.

“More than that, it’s an encouragement in my pursuit of an academic career,” Ms Pesenti said.

“My family is exceptionally proud, and my mother, who accompanied me to the Dean’s Dialogue to receive the award, said she was very grateful to be at Cass to celebrate the achievement.”

Ms Pesenti went on to thank the academic community at Cass for its support during her studies.

“The three years of my PhD studies at Cass have been stimulating and enriching, in particular through the excellent supervision of Dr Andreas Tsanakas and Dr Pietro Millossovich and the numerous discussions with professors at the faculty of actuarial science and insurance,” she said.

“A PhD from Cass Business School together with the Dimitris N Chorafas Foundation Award will open doors I’ve never dreamed of as an undergraduate.”
