Cass PhD student wins prestigious Academic Paper prize
Cass student is first student to ever win the IMCA Academic Paper Competition
Cass Business School doctoral student Cheng Yan has become the first ever student to win the third Annual Journal of Investment Consulting Academic Paper, a prize previously won by academics.
Final year PhD student, Cheng was celebrated by the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA), who announced and sponsor the award.
His winning paper is titled 'Foreign Investors in Emerging Equity Markets: Currency Effect Perspective'.
Using a foreign-exchange perspective, it investigated the daily trading behaviour and price impact of foreign investors in six Asian emerging equity markets over the past two decades. His findings offer new insights into the dynamics of flows, FX and the equity market.
Alongside the honour of having his work published in the spring 2015 issue of the Journal of Investment Consulting, Cheng was awarded $5,000 in funding from the IMCA.
"It is a very well-respected prize and it feels very good to have won it," said Cheng, "IMCA is a very influential association in the industry and this competition is extremely high-level. The winner of the Second Annual Competition was Professor Martijn Cremers from the University of Notre Dame, and the winner of the First was Professor Russ Wermers from the University of Maryland with his co-authors. Both these professors are really big names in academia and as a PhD student, I feel honoured to have a single-authored paper being listed on the same page with theirs. I hope to publish more papers in future in other prestigious journals they have published in."
The Academic Paper competition aims to celebrate the work of academics and doctoral students, with special encouragement given to promoting the research of non-tenured faculty.
Papers must examine recent research relevant to investment consulting and private wealth management, whilst developing theory and applied research on their chosen topic.
The winner is selected by the editorial advisory board of The Journal of Investment Consulting.
