Business Research: Practice in London 

Third year undergraduates consult with London businesses

Last term, third year students on the BSc Business Studies programme at Cass took part in Business Research: Practice in London.

Under the supervision of Dr Joanna Zaleska and Prof. Lilian M. de Menezes, 98 students were divided into 19 groups. They were tasked with research projects at different organisations around London. 

The organisations involved ranged from independent cultural social enterprise The Big Bang Lab, to Ogunte, a women-led social innovations company.

The course was designed to teach students how to formulate a research problem/question. They had to choose quantitative and qualitative research methods and collect, analyse and present data. 

The four week fieldwork project required the development of creativity, research and organisational as well as interpersonal skills among the students.

Course Director Dr Joanna Zaleska said: "Although the short-term objective was to prepare students methodologically for their final dissertations, the long-term objective was to provide them with a set of skills that would be fundamental for carrying out any business research project. Research skills are basic employability skills which are required by employers from our students on graduation."

Paolo Pagliarin, Founder and Director of Planet Volunteer said "I would like to send my appreciation and thanks for the fantastic research project carried out by the team that were assigned to us. The student team compiled a comprehensive report of findings that provides a great insight into the current usage of our social media and it will be very valuable in setting up next year's social media strategy."

Davis Scholtz, Director of Strategy and Product for Mallowstreet, the online pension community, said "The interaction with the Cass team was very professional, and we were impressed with their maturity, dedication and the quality of the approach they took as a group."
