Cass student shows love for local community
Wing Poon organises Valentine's concert for elderly
Cass MSc Actuarial Science student Wing Poon, has organised a Valentine's music concert for the elderly in Islington through the Community Leadership Programme at City University London .
Wing, also known as Joanna, learned that isolation and loneliness had been identified as a major problem in people over fifty-five in Islington and developed the project as a means to tackle this issue. Through the Community Leadership Project, Joanna pitched her idea to a funding panel and was granted the maximum £250 available for the venture.
The funding panel comprised staff from City's Community Leadership Project and managing directors from UBS bank. The programme has good volunteering links with the bank and UBS managers and staff offer feedback to volunteers on their pitches and provide project management mentoring.
The Community Leadership Programme is run through City Volunteering. City Volunteering supports City University London students and staff members who wish to volunteer. Services include advising students who wish to find a volunteering opportunity and offering management support to a range of community volunteering projects.
Ben Butler, Community Volunteering Officer at City University London said:
"Joanna's fastidious approach to planning and organising this event has been impressive. She has spent time liaising with several key stakeholders to ensure that the event works and has done a great job of mobilising her fellow students to perform for local older residents. I believe that the skills Joanna has developed through planning, running and evaluating this event will serve her very well in the future."
Wing has co-ordinated the project with the Cass Volunteering Society and the Cass Music Society. The musicians and singers are all Cass students.
The concert will take place on St Valentine's Day, February 14, at St Luke's Centre, Central Street, Islington.
