Invest early and hope for a home run

In this week's Cass Talks Guy Fraser-Samspon explains the risks faced by venture capital investors

The venture capitalists that backed a fledgling business-focussed social network called LinkedIn, in 2003, last week saw a bumper 'home run' return on their investment. However, in this week's Cass Talks private equity expert and visiting lecturer at Cass, Guy Fraser-Sampson, warns that for every good news story like LinkedIn there are twenty investments that don't work out.

In discussion with MBA student Yo Takatsuki, Guy also explains that many of the questions that were posed during the first dot-com bubble, 'how do you commercialise this?', 'how do you monetise it?' are still being asked of social networks such as LinkedIn. Until those questions are resolved the end game for these investments is unclear.

The Cass Talks interviews are an opportunity to hear Cass faculty and prominent alumni give their perspective on current business and finance news stories, global issues affecting the business world and new research coming out of the School.
