Cass MSc Student wins £5000 Scholarship

Stephen Cooke Scholarship 2011 awarded to Nicolas Greilsamer

Cass International Accounting and Finance MSc Student Nicolas Greilsamer has been awarded a top scholarship by The Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI).

Entrants for the award were challenged to write an essay discussing the principal regulatory changes they believed that the UK Banking Commission should apply in light of the recent financial crisis. Shortlisted candidates then undertook a general and financial knowledge test and a panel interview at the CISI offices in London.

Nicolas, of dual French-American nationality, was one of four candidates assessed by the Stephen Cooke Scholarship panel of trustees. He has a BSc in Investment & Financial Risk Management (Hons) from Cass Business School, and has previously worked in investment banking. He currently presides over the Cass Mergers & Acquisitions Society.

Nicolas says, "I am delighted to have won the award and it was an honour to represent Cass in the competition. The essay we were asked to write was very relevant to the current regulatory changes taking place in the UK and gave me an opportunity to contribute to the big debate. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to present my views to the CISI panel of trustees in the final round. I am particularly pleased that the essay will be published in the CISI's quarterly magazine. The scholarship was a huge and unexpected help for me in funding my masters in International Accounting & Finance at Cass Business School."

MSc course director, Giacinta Cestone added, "This is fantastic news. I am very proud of Nicolas and his achievement. I read his essay and found it to be of a very high standard; it was intelligently researched and meticulously presented. It is particularly pleasing that Nicolas has studied on the undergraduate course and is now flourishing as an MSc student, further cementing Cass' commitment to academic excellence. This award will further his development and enhance his career choices, he is a deserved winner."

The Stephen Cooke Scholarship is worth £5000 to the winner and is open to students of financial subjects at accredited CISI centres of excellence in the UK. Cass has been an accredited centre of excellence since May 2007. Centres of excellence are a select group of UK universities, recognised by the CISI as offering leadership in academic education on financial markets.

The scholarship is in memory of Stephen Cooke, who died in 1997. He was a member of the board of the Securities Institute, of the London Stock Exchange and of APCIMS, the stockbrokers' trade association.
