Managing the Modern Law Firm to be published as paperback

Professor Laura Empson's book adopted as core text on Masters courses in US and Europe

Wednesday, 1 September, 2010

Professor Laura Empson's Managing the Modern Law Firm has recently been published as a paperback edition because of strong and sustained sales amongst lawyers and law firm managers, and because it has been adopted as a core text on various Masters courses in Europe and the US.

First published by Oxford University Press in 2007, Managing the Modern Law Firm was described by The Times as marking a seminal moment in the development of management theory in this sector.  The book addresses the complexities of the management of modern law firms and has been recognised as one of the most important studies in its field; it includes a chapter on partnership governance, based on Professor Empson's ESRC research, which is rapidly becoming accepted as a major point of reference for academics conducting and teaching related studies.

Professor Empson, Director of the Centre for Professional Service Firms at Cass, commented: The book was conceived by me as a means of bringing together scholars from a variety of fields who are doing research into law firms, with the view to providing a reflection on contemporary developments in law firm management which would be of value to academics and practitioners alike.  We struggled initially to convert some of our more esoteric ideas and data into a language that would be interesting and accessible to practitioners but it worked out very well in the end.

Managing the Modern Law Firm includes a series of chapters by academics from leading academic institutions such as Harvard Law School, Northwestern (Kellogg), London Business School, and Harvard Business School among others.  The concluding chapter of the book by Tony Angel, previously Managing Partner of Linklaters, brings a valuable practitioner perspective to the academic's discussions.  Tony Angel is involved in the Cass Centre for Professional Service Firms  and in 2009 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by City University, in recognition of his major contribution to the field of management in the legal profession.

Managing the Modern Law Firm is available at, RRP £19.99.
