Cass MBA alumna nominated for Women of the Future Award

Kanini Mutooni recognised as one of Britain's young female rising stars

Tuesday, 5 October, 2010

Cass MBA alumna Kanini Mutooni has been nominated for the MBA Star Award at the annual Women of the Future Awards for her work establishing a social enterprise business,
The Women of the Future awards were created to unearth and recognise Britain's stars of tomorrow across diverse industries, to celebrate high achieving women under 35, inspirational in their professions. The MBA Star Award is a new award for 2010 and it recognises a female MBA student of exceptional vision, talent and promise. This is not an academic award; rather, the judges are looking to identify individual stories of current or former MBA students with a compelling life-story and exciting visions for the future.
Kanini was nominated for the idea and her work establishing a business which connects private investors in Europe with young, growing and female-owned African businesses through the provision of small loans.  She was inspired to begin this venture after completing her MBA thesis on the subject of microfinance and social lending.  Since leaving her home nation of Kenya in June 2000, she has championed the need for greater education in Africa and jointly established an organisation which helps to finance the education of girls in secondary school in rural Kenya.
The most exhilarating feeling was going back to Kenya and visiting the village where the girls were living and watching them talk excitedly about being in school and about the promising future that lay ahead, she said. The establishment of my new venture,, echoes what I have always wanted to do, which is to make a different in my home continent.  Microfinance is a proven method for alleviating poverty and promoting economic development.  I am finally able to build a potentially profitable business and at the same time participate in alleviating poverty in Africa.
The Women of the Future Award winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on Tuesday 9 November, 2010.
