A slice of strategy: The Great Cass Bake Off tests student innovation

First ever Great Cass Bake Off simulation game lets students put their Strategy Module into practice

Following the baking craze sweeping the nation, Cass students competed in their own version of the hit BBC show with the first ever 'Great Cass Bake Off'.

Teams of students were given just one hour to make the best cake for the high end market, judged on taste, look and innovation.

But the competition wasn't just a chance to show off their cooking skills; it was a simulation game that marked the end of Professor Paolo Aversa's Strategy Module.

Students were banned from using devices to find recipes but could barter their basic ingredients with the Cass Chef for baking tips and trade with other teams.

One team member was nominated to film the group's experience; showing the development of the project and asking problem solving questions.

After the tasting and awards ceremony students reflected on their teams' strategies in relation to topics learnt throughout the module.

Professor Aversa commented on the success of the exercise; "Baking a cake with limited resources in a short amount of time forces students to collectively reflect on many strategic aspects we discussed in traditional lectures: goals, decisions, roles, structures, resources, and alliances. The "kitchen" is a critical area which strategy scholars look into (for example in high-end restaurants) to underpin competitive and organisational dynamics. In addition, students tend to remember this type of activities more easily, and they offer the students an innovative way of approaching compelling themes in strategic management."

The winners were Group 6 which was Tim Ball, Jorge Gonzalez Sadornil, Gabor Koros, Ainsley Kowal, Adele Lewis, Parthipan Paramsothynathan, Veer Shah and Anna Tee.
