Fruitful HRM teaching session for EMBA students in Dubai

Students treated to insights from prestigious guest speakers

Last month, Dr Joanna Zaleska flew out to Dubai to deliver classes on Human Resources Management (HRM) to students on the Executive MBA (EMBA) programme. The sessions focused largely on performance management and included guest lecturers from three experienced practitioners:

Wayne Clarke, Founding Partner, The Global Growth Institute
Samir Mardini, Head of Talent Practice, Aon Hewitt Middle East
Ammar Shams, Regional Head of Corporate Sustainability, HSBC Bank Middle East

Dr Zaleska invited the classes to first examine performance at the organisational level.

"This approach considers performance management as a tool which allows senior management to determine goals within their organisation; the kinds of achievement and behaviour that are to be rewarded," she explained.

Students also reviewed different methods of performance appraisal, honing in on 360 degree feedback and managerial skills.

HSBC's Ammar Shams has been a regular guest speaker on the Cass Dubai EMBA HRM course for the last 5 years. He spoke of the complexity of performance management decisions and identified ways to ensure HRM practices translate into improvements in performance, as they are intended to do.

Wayne Clarke shared his insights into features which characterise the best managers.

He said: "The best employers motivate, consider, care and converse. They know how to inspire and energise their people, give recognition, provide support and show understanding. They know how to listen, as well as how to give instructions."

Samir Mardini spoke about the Best Employers 2009 Middle East survey. The results indicated that the best employers recognise outstanding performance by providing both financial and non-financial recognition. The survey also showed that employees clearer on the issues of pay and rewards tend to strive beyond usual expectations.

Dr Zaleska said: "The aim of the International Human Resources Management (HRM) module is to give students an opportunity to understand the sheer range of choice available when designing and setting up effective performance appraisal systems."
