Cass professor celebrated for outstanding research impact

Professor Paula Jarzabkowski awarded by ESRC

Cass Professor Paula Jarzabkowski has been awarded a Celebrating Impact Prize by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).  She received the award for the 'Outstanding Impact in Business' of her research.

ESRC is the UK's largest organisation for funding research on economic and social issues. It supports independent, high quality research which has an impact on business, the public sector and the third sector.

Along with five other category winners, Professor Jarzabkowski received a trophy and £10,000 to promote economic and social impacts of research.

She was presented the award by BBC broadcaster Evan Davis at a ceremony held at Church House in Westminster.

Professor Paul Boyle, Chief Executive for the ESRC said: "We are delighted to celebrate those who have gone above and beyond in ensuring the best economic and societal impact from their work".

"The breadth of impacts rewarded by the prize demonstrates the range of issues that social science research contributes to, offering solutions to the many challenges our society faces."

"The applications were judged by a panel of experts from business, academia and the public sector. The shortlisted entrants were invited to attend an interview, with a user of their research, to further demonstrate to the panel their role in achieving outstanding research impact."

Professor Paula Jarzabkowski commented: "The global reinsurance industry that I studied has a critical economic and social role. It underpins the liquidity of insurance companies, ensuring that they can pay on large losses caused by natural and man-made disasters, such as floods, hurricanes and acts of terrorism. Our work improved reinsurance business processes, provided frameworks to understand changes in the industry, and signalled the potential dangers of systemic risk."

Bronek Masojada, Chairman of the Insurance Intellectual Capital Initiative and Chief Executive, Hiscox Group, commented: "Paula's work has had tangible benefits to the industry through the specific frameworks, tools and diagnostics she has developed. While they bring an academic perspective that enables participants to see the big picture they are also practical and immediately useful."
