Ronnie Chan joins Hong Kong alumni event

More than 100 alumni gather at exclusive Asia Society Hong Kong

Billionaire businessman Ronnie Chan and the Lord Mayor of the City of London joined former Cass students for drinks at an alumni reception in Hong Kong.

Mr Chan, who is Chairman of the Hang Lung Properties and a renowned philanthropist, mixed with more than 100 alumni at the exclusive Asia Society which he co-chairs.

He was joined by the Lord Mayor of the City of London and Chancellor of City University, Alderman David Wootton, who is heading up a delegation to promote British business in the region.

Other speakers included Cass alumna Denise Lau, who is Chief Operating Officer of the BSC Group Limited and Head of the Hong Kong alumni committee.

Welcoming guests at the event, Alderman David Wootton said: "As Lord Mayor of the City of London I support and promote the City brand - by which I mean the whole of the UK's financial and professional services industry.

"But there is another UK export I want to praise today - education. I would like to pay tribute to the invaluable contribution City University and the Cass Business School make to the life of London and the lives of the thousands of its alumni across the world and I am proud of my role as Chancellor of City University."

Mr Chan, who is one of Asia's best known entrepreneurs, and who has previously spoken at Cass's China symposium in Shanghai, spoke about the global financial crisis and the state of the world economy, finishing by sharing tips on starting up a business. He said:

"With Europe and the US in a constant state of financial turmoil, China remains a strong investment opportunity. Selecting carefully the sector in which to develop your business is also key to the success of the future Asian-based billionaires".

Cass Director of Development & External Relations, Paola Barbarino, said: "We were delighted to have such a distinguished line-up of guests at this year's alumni event. In particular, it was a privilege to welcome Ronnie Chan who is one of Asia's most influential businessmen.

As ever, it was great to see some of our 600 Hong Kong alumni who we hope enjoyed the opportunity to renew old friendships and make new business and social contacts."
