Cass reveals new look MSc in Management

Revamped course includes an MBA-style business consulting project

Students taking Cass Business School's MSc in Management will study on a newly structured course from September 2012.

The School has revealed a series of changes to its flagship postgraduate degree, including a new final term business consulting project.

Two other new modules - Practice of Management and Business in Society - have also been added to the final term, placing greater emphasis on the practical use of knowledge students have gained during the course.

Cass MSc in Management Programme Director, Professor Gianvito Lanzolla, said: "We have remodelled the content and delivery of the course to reflect the very latest thinking in management research and practice.

"The course has been significantly strengthened in its analytical components which will equip students with the knowledge and competences required to critically analyze complex business and management issues. At the same time, the course will help students to develop their self-awareness and leadership style to positively influence people and organisations."

Multinational brands

The new business consulting module will see teams of up to five students solve real life business problems currently facing some of the world's best known companies.

From growth strategies and restructuring to international expansion and new product launches, students will be given six weeks to come up with a solution before presenting their findings to a panel of the companies' senior executives.

Among the blue chip firms already signed up to take part are Cartier, PwC, Interbrand, Johnson & Johnson, RBS, Houlihan Lokey, Royal Mail, S&P and Virgin.

"The idea is to encourage students to take the classroom knowledge they have acquired and put it into practice on real challenges facing blue chip multinationals," said Dr Gianvito Lanzolla, Programme Director for the MSc in Management.

"This module will give our students unrivalled exposure to senior executives from some of the world's best known companies where they can sharpen their knowledge and build much needed self confidence in applying that knowledge. It will also help students to increase their work experience, expand their professional network and open up potential career opportunities."

Analytical foundations

The first term is aimed at laying solid analytical foundations in all areas related to business and management including accounting, finance, marketing, microeconomics, statistical methods, marketing, organizational behaviour and strategic analysis.

The second term deepens that knowledge and allows students to specialise in one selected area among the three currently available: entrepreneurship, marketing and strategic management.

In the third term, the programme gives students the opportunity to apply the analytical and conceptual tools learned in the first two terms to real world challenges. Three new modules have been developed to deliver on this goal - Business and Society, Practice of Management and the Business Consulting project.

Social implications

The new Business in Society module is designed to help students reflect on the wider social implications of business decisions. The module is unusual as it will be taught using real life examples presented by business professionals from firms including Accenture, Bank of America, Deloitte, KPMG and Merrill Lynch.

There will also be a new Practice of Management module in which students will be asked to apply the knowledge acquired in the term one and two foundations courses in Organizational Behaviour and Leadership and Change.

Students will be asked to address situations such as dealing with a disruptive member of staff, taking decisions under uncertainty, managing conflicts, giving and receiving feedback and negotiating a deal. Real life case studies will be presented and discussed with senior executives from leading companies.

The programme also includes two optional components: a European field trip to Paris where students are taught by Cass's partner ESCP and a business plan competition - in conjunction with Cass's Peter Cullum Centre for Entrepreneurship - where students have the opportunity to present their business plans to senior venture capitalists, business angels and industry professionals.
