Cass Professor invited to join Government Advisory Panel

Professor Les Mayhew recognised for his research into population forecasting

Cass Professor Les Mayhew has recently been invited to join the Office for National Statistics (ONS) National Population Projections Expert Advisory Panel, a highly esteemed government advisory group.

The panel is an expert group of demographers that advises the ONS on the assumptions and methods to use in national biennial population projections. The population projections are used to form the basis of government planning and expenditure.

National population projections by age and sex are produced by the ONS for the United Kingdom every two years and Professor Mayhew's invitation stems from his research into new methods for forecasting population survival and mortality.
His research, undertaken in partnership with David Smith of Cass, explores life expectancy and mortality and offers a new insight in to predicting demographic shifts in the future.

Professor Mayhew said of the invitation "I am delighted to be invited to work with some of the leading UK specialists in predicting population change. I look forward to working with the ONS and fulfilling my role on this prestigious panel."
