Award Winning Academic takes up Accounting Post

Professor Peter Pope joins Cass

Professor Peter Pope has joined the Faculty of Finance as Professor of Accounting. Before joining Cass in January 2011, Peter Pope held academic positions at Lancaster University Management School, Strathclyde Business School and Liverpool University.

He has also been visiting professor at the Stern School, New York University, the University of California at Berkeley, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Chinese University Hong Kong, Monash University and Macquarie University.
Professor Pope has researched and published extensively in the areas of capital markets, financial reporting and international equity valuation. His current research interests are focused on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) implementation in Europe, global equity market anomalies and fundamental valuation models, with particular reference to the links between financial statement factors, risk and equity returns.

His research has received several prestigious awards including the 2008 Best Paper Award 2004-2008 from the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section of the American Accounting Association. He received the Distinguished Academic of the Year Award from the British Accounting Association in 2007.

Professor Pope says of his appointment: "I am delighted to have moved to Cass Business School. The Accounting group has a strong reputation for producing high quality academic research that is extremely relevant to the investors and financial institutions that surround Cass.

Professor Lucio Sarno, Head of the Faculty of Finance at Cass said: "I am delighted that Peter has joined us as Professor of Accounting at Cass. He is a world-leading scholar who has made important contributions in a number of areas spanning both accounting as well as finance, publishing in leading journals for three decades-he is in a league of his own.

"He brings to Cass a wealth of experience in addition to his scholarly work, acting as a Co-editor of the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, the Academic Coordinator of the Institute of Quantitative Investment Research (INQUIRE) UK, a former RAE Panel member on two occasions, and a frequent consultant of City firms."

Professor Pope's industry roles include having been Head of the V-Lab research programme at Old Mutual Asset Managers in London from 2006-2010 and Head of Investment Research at Mitsubishi Finance International in 1991.
