Cass Professor explores the Changing Face of Management in China

New book covers challenges for businesses and managers in the region

Wednesday, 17 March, 2010

Cass Professor Chris Rowley has co-edited a new book, The Changing Face of Management in China, which explores the key challenges facing business and managers in China, both across management functions, as well as across a range of sectors and organisation types.
Despite China being one of the fastest developing emerging economies in the world and having a huge international influence, both politically and economically, very few books cover both the full range of management functions, as well as key issues facing managers.
Professor Rowley brings his expertise to the book as Professor of Human Resource Management at Cass and Director of the Centre for Research in Asian Management at City University.  With his co-editor, Professor Fang Lee Cook, Professor of Human Resource Management and Chinese Studies at RMIT University, Australia, he examines a range of areas of Chinese management in a common framework in the context of local political, economic and social traditions, and the global economy.
Each chapter is written by prominent international scholars from the UK, US, Australia, China and Hong Kong with direct experience in this market.  These contributors include Ng Sek Hong, Olivia Ip, Russell Smyth, J. Mark Munoz, Richard Chamblin, Yonggui Wang, Qingguo Zhai, and practitioners, including Kun Huang (a senior HR manager) and Xiu Ying Zheng-Pratt from Caterpillar.
The book covers key practice areas of management, including human resources, performance, marketing, accounting, as well as issues relating to large, state-owned enterprises, small firms, and mergers and acquisitions.  It provides real life vignettes and examples of managers and organisations to give a voice to the themes and practices, as well as useful teaching aids.
