As you will have heard from the newspapers and messages from the School, Professor Shelagh Heffernan died just before Christmas. She made an enormous contribution to Cass, City University and the banking discipline through her widely published research, books and teaching. Many of you knew Shelagh personally both as a friend and a colleague, and will remember that she dedicated nearly three decades of her life to working at Cass. She was completely devoted to teaching and to her students. Despite worsening illness she still continued to tutor students until shortly before her death.

It is with this in mind that her family and colleagues at Cass have decided to establish a scholarship fund in her memory as a tribute to all she did at Cass, City University and Banking and International Finance in particular. The Shelagh Heffernan Scholarship will be awarded to a final year undergraduate student studying Banking and International Finance based on the strength of their second year examinations as assessed by the board of examiners.

It is our hope that this scholarship will support and inspire many more gifted individuals who choose to pursue a career through the course that Shelagh herself directed for very many years. It would be wonderful if we could raise enough funds to be able to make the award sufficient to cover much of the cost of the recipient’s tuition fees for his/her final year, and to keep the scholarship going for years to come. As you know government funding changes mean that fees will rise sharply from October 2012. This will make a scholarship such as the one we propose here even more valuable.

The generous support and backing of the Banking and International Finance Classes of 1998 and 1999 has launched our fundraising efforts. A total of £2,105 has been raised to date, but we need a further £1,270 in order to be able to offer the Scholarship to a student at the start of this coming academic year.

You can help Shelagh’s legacy live on by making a donation online, via this link http://www.cass.city.ac.uk/more-about-cass/support-cass/donate-now
