Hellespont Group Chairman awarded honorary Doctorate

Dr Basil Phrixos Papachristidis, Chairman of Hellespont Holdings Ltd and Director of Hellespont Marine Services Ltd, has been awarded an honorary DSc degree by City University London.

Dr Papachristidis was recognised for his significant contributions to international shipping, both as Chairman of Hellespont Group and as an industry campaigner, advocate and educator.

Dr Papachristidis, a Visiting Professor at Cass Business School at the University, has spoken twice a year to the School's MSc Shipping, Trade and Finance students since 1984, when the degree was established. He passes on his extensive knowledge and expertise of shipping to the next generation of industry professionals.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony on Monday, Dr Basil Papachristidis said: "The most immediate challenges to those on the threshold of their careers are an unstable economy, a more competitive job market and a more complex political and business environment.

But do not be daunted, and let no one dampen your ambition or the pursuit of your dreams. Rise to the challenges you face. None is insurmountable, and the greater the challenges, the greater the rewards. You should write the script of your own business lives and do not allow conventional wisdom to constrain your choices or others to usurp the initiative in shaping your lives and careers".

Dean of Cass Business School, Professor Steve Haberman commented: "We are very pleased to award Dr Papachristidis an honorary degree in recognition of his distinguished achievements and significant contributions to international shipping. He has been a very strong supporter of Cass and The Costas Grammenos Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance for many years."

Professor Paul Curran, Vice-Chancellor of City University London, added: "We are proud to honour Dr Papachristidis whose considerable achievements reflect City's commitment to academic excellence and focus on business and the professions. I congratulate him on his award."
