Cass Professor ranked among top 100 most influential shipping personalities

24 January 2012

Professor of Shipping Trade and Finance, Costas Grammenos, has been ranked among the top 100 most influential people in shipping.

The annual list, compiled by an expert panel of journalists from Lloyd's List, reviews the most powerful movers and shakers in the global shipping industry.

Professor Grammenos was ranked 65th in the list for his "massive contribution to teaching and research in global shipping trade and finance". He is the only academic to be included in the rankings.

"Few in the industry can claim to have been responsible for the formative education in the finer points of maritime finance for so many leading ship-owners," the list says.

"His input over the years means that almost a whole generation of key decision makers in shipping have been influenced by his courses, contributing in no small way to the shift of many traditional family ship owning companies into more efficient corporate enterprises."

According to the list, Professor Grammenos' "immense influence" stems from his establishment in 1984 of Cass's International Centre for Shipping Trade and Finance, where he pioneered courses including the MSc in Shipping Trade and Finance.

The Centre, which has now been named in his honour, undertakes world leading research and hosts international events to promote discussion of topical issues affecting international shipping and finance.

"It is an honour to be named on the list alongside so many of the shipping world's most influential personalities," Professor Grammenos said. "This achievement is an indication of the high esteem in which the Centre's teaching and research is held by the shipping industry as a whole."

Professor Grammenos has authored several books, including the Handbook of Maritime Economics and Business. The book brings together contributions from leading global maritime economists into a single volume covering the latest research in key aspects of the subject.
