The Skinners Company awards new grants

New bursaries for Centre for Charity Effectiveness

Wednesday, 2 August, 2006

The Centre for Charity Effectiveness at Cass has been awarded two bursaries by a Skinners’ Company charity which helps disadvantaged young people with grants for vocational training.  Two applicants hoping to study an MSc at the Centre will receive course fee subsidies from Lawrence Atwell’s Charity in the academic year 2006 -2007.

The bursary support for Cass will be based on two eligibility criteria: it will have a preference for younger applicants, and for those from a low income background.

Paul Palmer, Professor of Voluntary Sector Management at Cass comments: “Some individuals are unable to pay their course fees in full, so these two bursaries from Lawrence Atwell’s Charity are a great help.  We also look forward to the possibility of renewing the application in subsequent years.”

Sue Ellis, Charities Officer for the Skinners’ Company adds: “Skills development is a key area for us, not as a grant maker and voluntary sector service provider.  We are delighted to be involved in affording more people the opportunity to take up a first class learning experience at Cass.”

About the Centre for Charity Effectiveness

The Centre for Charity Effectiveness is a unique centre of excellence in Europe and strives to increase the effectiveness and achievement of voluntary and community organisations.  The Centre recognises that individuals in charities are paid substantially less than their commercial counterparts, and as a result, Cass subsidises the charity courses as part of its own CSR initiatives.

About the Skinners’ Company

The Skinners’ Company is one of the ‘Great Twelve’ Livery Companies of the City of London.  It was founded by royal charter in 1327 to regulate and control the fur trade, although today it has no connection to that industry.  The Company now acts as a force for good in education, social housing and charitable grant-making.  It provides homes, schools and grant funding to enable people of all ages to lead full and independent lives.

The Company was one of two livery companies involved in the establishment of the Northampton Institute, now the flourishing and vibrant City University.
