Knowledge transfer

What is Knowledge Transfer?

Knowledge Transfer is any type of engagement and collaboration with businesses and the wider community; any activity that demonstrates the practical application and impact of university-generated knowledge and research to society and practitioner groups.

Knowledge Transfer is supported by the English government in the form of the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF). HEIF is allocated according to a funding formula, based on universities' institutional Knowledge Transfer plans submitted to HEFCE.

What activities qualify as Knowledge Transfer?

Research commissioned by businesses Collaborative research between HEIs and businesses Consultancy Knowledge Transfer Partnerships Non-credit bearing courses Technology Transfer-Intellectual property (spin-offs, licences, disclosures, patents)

Technology Transfer-Intellectual Property Rights

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) is an umbrella term to cover various legal monopoly rights including Patents, Trade Marks, Know-how, Copy right and Design Right. It is important to remember that protecting IP enables investment into research and protected IP has a better chance of commercial investment.

If you are thinking of disclosing the details of your research and technical ideas to another party (potential business partner) you are strongly advised to consider using a Confidential Disclosure Agreement (CDA). Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDAs), also known as Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), are legally-binding documents that enable you to record the terms under which you exchange secret information.

CDAs and Licence agreements have to be approved and signed through the Technology Transfer Office at City University, and should not be signed by individuals in personal capacity. This provides you with better indemnity cover. Please allow for 10 working days for formal review and authorisations.
