Research at the Film Business Academy
The new Film Business Research Centre will work with the industry to analyse current practice, and develop new ideas and business models. We will explore the latest trends in marketing, new technologies, convergence and global media strategy.
Companies will benefit as cutting edge research informs future development, and students will benefit as our findings keep their learning fresh and relevant.
The research programme will feed into demand for briefed consultancy work. In the future, we will be able to advise on policy formulation and strategic planning in the public sector, and business modelling and strategy for companies in film and communication.
The Film Business Research Centre will be headed by Cass Professor of Strategy and media expert Professor Joseph Lampel, an international authority on strategy, co-editor of Organization Science Special Issue on the Cultural Industries, and co-author of the new book "The Business of Culture: Strategic Perspectives in Media and Entertainment".
International research collaborations are planned with Professor Jamal Shamsie at Michigan State University (his work on the Hollywood studio system won the prestigious American Academy of Management award and he has developed strategy test cases on Warner Brothers, Pixar and HBO). Professor Al Leiberman of Stern NYU (author of The Entertainment Marketing Revolution) and Professor Thorsten Henning-Thureau (Cass Visiting Professor in Movie Marketing, and Chair for Marketing and Media Research at The Bauhaus-University of Weimar) will also be contributors to the research agenda.
It is intended that the Centre will collaborate with leading film research
consultants Olsberg SPI and Terry
Ilott. Film work already won by Cass includes research for the government
into the integration of business and creative knowledge in the film industry
at the micro entrepreneurial level (for the Economic and Social Research Council).
