History of the Faculty

The actuarial presence at City University started in the early 1970's and was the first such group in the country.

In 1974, the University introduced a three year BSc Honours Degree in Actuarial Science, with the support of the insurance companies and the actuarial profession. Since then, this course has become very successful, the current intake being about 50 undergraduates with an average GCE ‘A’ level attainment in excess of ABB.

In 1985, the University introduced a one year full-time Postgraduate Diploma course in Actuarial Science, with the active encouragement of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. The intake for this course now consists of a substantial number of graduates, many of whom are directly sponsored by insurance companies and consultants (from home and abroad). An increasing number of students are continuing to convert their Diploma to MSc.

In 1997 the Postgraduate MSc/Diploma course in Actuarial Management was introduced in response to the reorganisation of the later professional subjects

In 2002 the Department of Actuarial Science and Statistics left the School of Mathematics and became one of the Faculties making up Cass Business School, the new name for City University Business School.
