Successes with ESRC: Seminar Series Competition

EMG is pleased to announce the award of its 3rd ESRC grant in the Seminar Series Competition of £15,000 for a new seminar series on Governments, Borrowers, Investors and International Organisations: The Role of Major Players in Emerging Markets. The series will focus on topics at the leading edge of emerging markets research, on the continuing engagement of relevant research users and early career academics, and will result in novel research.

Workshops

EMG organised on the 1st of May 2009 the 3rd workshop on Microstructure of Financial Markets. The workshop covered microstructure issues relating to both equities and foreign exchange markets. The keynote speaker was Tarun Chordia, Professor of Finance, Goizueta Business School, Emory University, Atlanta, USA, who spoke on the very topical issue of illiquidity and how it impacts differently the buy and sell side of stock prices. Using a large cross-section of stocks over more than 20 years he finds pervasive evidence that sell-side illiquidity exceeds buy-side illiquidity. Other speakers included Albert Menkveld from VU University, Amsterdam, Carol Osler from Brandeis University, US, Geir Hoidal Bjonnes from The Norwegian School of Management BI, Norway, Richard Payne from Warwick Business School, UK, Mike Bowe, Manchester Business School, UK.

Visiting Professors

Dr Guzhan Gulay, Senior Market Supervisor at the Stock Market Department of Istanbul Stock Exchange is visiting EMG for a year starting in June 2009. His research interests are on microstructure issues of equity markets.
