September 11th Insurance Trust Scholarship
The September 11th Scholarship is provided by The September 11th Insurance Trust which is supported by Lloyds and a number of firms in the London insurance market. The Trust was established, in association with the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), on the initiative of Aon and Marsh, following the attacks in New York on 11 September 2001. This £10,000 scholarship, awarded in memory of friends and colleagues who lost their lives in the attacks, will be awarded to one student studying the MSc in Insurance and Risk each year. The Trust will view the short list of candidates before a final decision on a recipient is made. The application criteria for this scholarship include:
- An essay question by which the applicants demonstrate why they want to work in the insurance industry and why the financial assistance is important to them. Exact essay title will be given at the second stage of the shortlisting process.
- Proof of need for financial support.
As well as financial assistance, the Trust and its associated companies will provide the scholar with a mentor and a Business Research Project which forms part of their final assessment.
The Michael M Xylas MSc Scholarship
The Michael M. Xylas Scholarship (formerly known as the Astron MMX Scholarship) was established at Cass Business School by Matrona Egon Xylas in memory of her father, Michael M. Xylas.
Michael M. Xylas was born on the Island of Chios in 1899. Having studied law, which was largely self taught, he entered the world of shipping. After World War 2 Michael came to England and set up Faros Shipping Co. which was the forerunner of what is now known as the Phoenix Group, a leading Greek shipping business, now chaired by his grandson, Nicolas Comninos Xylas.
His progress in shipping was rapid and he was entrusted by family and friends with the management of their vessels. He was always at the forefront of Greek shipping of which he became a leading member, participating in all the committees and constantly leading the way with new ideas, as well as helping so many other now well-known shipping families to get started.
Michael M. Xylas was an extremely philanthropic man who never lost sight of the importance of supporting individual causes and communities. He led a huge beneficial program in his home island of Chios, investing in redeveloping the infrastructure, water supplies and roads as well as supporting the building of cultural centres and schools with countless donations. He died in 1982, leaving an enormous legacy as a modest and unassuming man who made an important difference to the lives of so many.
His daughter, Matrona Egon Xylas, has continued in her fathers' footsteps and is herself devoted to many initiatives in the fields of cultural and social responsibility.
The Michael M. Xylas Scholarship pays tribute to a great leader in the world of shipping, a well-loved and respected father and grandfather, as well as a man whose sense of responsibility in giving back to society has been taken up with full enthusiasm by his daughter Matrona Egon Xylas, his grandson Nicolas Comninos Xylas and granddaughter Stamatia Cottakis.
